My husband loves showing funny cat memes to our 7 year-old daughter Lily who loves cats, and so she recently discovered Nyan Cat. Of course she loved it…an adorable, animated cat with a Pop-Tart for a body and rainbow trailing behind it is just good, silly fun.
Its name comes from the song on the animation which goes “nyanyanyan…” since ‘nyan’ is Japanese for ‘meow.’ Created by Chris Torres in 2011, Nyan Cat is a registered trademark, and has nearly 4 million followers on Facebook!
Recently we had some dangerously cold days here in Iowa, and I tried to get Lily to wear a scarf, but she refused. I realized I could get her to wear one if she adored it, and that’s when I came up with the idea for a scarf, inspired by her favorite meme. Here it is!
I thought it would be a pretty simple pattern, but I ended up redoing almost the whole thing to finally get it to look right, and now I’m quite happy with the final look!
My favorite feature is how the rainbow loops through the cat, which is actually an open pocket. It can even be looped around twice for extra warmth.
The pattern is now available in my Etsy shop (link at top of page), and one actual scarf is also available while it lasts! It’s fun to make, so if I had the time I would make many more. I’m all about projects that don’t take me months to create. I was able to make a complete scarf in 2 days (while also taking care of my toddler), so there are people who can surely finish it in 1 day.
