Easter Cross Wreath

ribbon cross wreath DIY

I love having a special wreath for every occasion, but my Easter egg one got so old that the paint started crumbling off. So this year I decided to make an Easter wreath myself, and a more authentic one at that.

Though I’m a Christian, I’m generally not into cross stuff. I suppose the cross is too sacred to me to throw around casually. I’m baffled by how rappers can wear giant cross necklaces as they spew vulgar lyrics. I have one small cross necklace that was my grandmother’s she gave to me, and I only wear it once a year on Easter. The cross is deeply profound and the symbol of the purchase of my soul…the greatest gift and sacrifice ever made.

I wanted to make something simple yet beautiful to reflect that. I love glitz and glam, but this needed to be softer and warmer. It was a pretty quick, easy & inexpensive project!

Materials
– Wreath base (I used an old branch wreath)
– 1.5” wide Ribbon (I used Simplicty Burlap with lace…plain burlap would be nice too)
– Artificial Flowers & Greenery (I got both at Dollar Tree, 1 spray of each)
– Jute Cord (to wrap around cross middle – optional)

Supplies
– Fabric Scissors
– Needle/Thread (I used brown & white)
– Clear String (for hanging loop)
– Acrylic Paint/Paintbrush (optional)

Begin with the base. If you can’t buy a plain base, you might be able to get a wreath on consignment and just disassemble it. My old wreath had old, yellow glue bits which I squeezed with pliers to crumble off.

Place the ribbon vertically over the base on one side, and cut it, leaving enough on the back to sew on to the back. TIP: Sew instead of hot glue to attach everything so that the sun won’t melt off the pieces!

Cross Wreath Ribbon Assembly

Place more ribbon horizontally over the first ribbon to make a cross shape. It will look too long on one side for now.

Add a piece of jute cord to the middle in an X shape (if you like the look…this is optional) and knot it closed on the back.

Next is the flowers! I chose Easter lilies but do what you like. I wanted white but I only had pink, so I painted them more white. TIP: Adding paint is a great way to achieve smooth edges if the petals are frayed…just trim off once it’s dry!

Pull the flowers off the stems and arrange them opposite of the ribbon. Cluster them together to cover up the long side of the ribbon so that the cross now appears symmetrical. Sew to the base.

Place the greenery pieces between the flowers where you like and sew to the base.

Knot a small loop of clear string at the top back for hanging (or just use the jute cord).

And that’s it! It always feels satisfying restoring something old and worthless into something new and lovely. Hmm, that’s what Jesus does with people. Praise the Lord and Happy Easter!
